The Newest Wave In Radio Has No Waves

Actually, the newest wave in radio technology does not use a wave at all. It uses a satellite signal that is beamed down from the sky. It seems we are getting closer all the time to living in the Star Trek age. It has not been many years ago that the only way to get a radio signal to your home or car was by a tower that emit electromagnetic waves for broadcasting.

Technical Considerations Of XM Satellite Radio

The whole content of the radio service that is both data and audio content is represented by only two carriers. Other four carriers carry duplicates of the same content to achieve redundancy through diversity of signals. Time delayed and error correction schemes are used for carrying data on each carrier. This is done to enhance availability.

Learn Satellite Radio

Satellite radio is actually composed of two Boeing HS 702 satellites orbiting our atmosphere and aptly named Rock and Roll. One is located at approximately 85 degrees west longitude and the other at 115 degrees west longitude. Geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) is about 22,223 miles (35,764 km) above Earth, and is the type of orbit most commonly used for communications satellites. The first satellite to up, Rock, was placed in orbit on March 18, 2001. Roll followed with its launch on May 8. Satellite radio has a third HS-702 satellite on the ground ready to be launched in case one of the two orbiting satellites break down or fail.

A satellite is basically any object that revolves around a planet in a circular or elliptical path. The moon is Earth's original, natural satellite, and there are many artificial satellites as well, usually closer to Earth. Although anything that is in orbit around Earth is technically a satellite, the term "satellite" is typically used to describe a useful object placed in orbit purposely to perform some specific mission or task. We commonly hear about weather satellites, communication satellites and scientific satellites.
